With or without an ATV or customized dune buggy, get out and experience the Amargosa Dunes. The five square mile area of sand dunes located just off Highway 95 is an ideal playground if you have the “toys”. For those who prefer hiking or walking, you can still enjoy the beauty of this geological wonder in the Amargosa Desert area of southern Nevada.

Heading south, the Amargosa Dunes are located on US Highway 95 about 20 miles south of Beatty, the gateway to Death Valley. If you are traveling north from the Las Vegas area on Hwy. 95, the dunes are located about 7.5 miles from the junction of Hwy. 95 and Hwy. 373 in Amargosa Valley. Keep a keen eye for a paved road with a Valley View street sign. Turn onto that road and then travel about two miles west towards the dunes area. As you get close to the dirt road turn off for the dunes, there will be painted signs on the road that will prepare you for that turn (the 4 signs say GETREADY – TO – TURN).

If you have the proper vehicle, you can get right up to the dunes to unload your equipment. But if you have a “street” vehicle, you can still get reasonably close to the dunes. You can park, walk in, take off your shoes and enjoy the dunes too.

The Big Dune, which peaks out at about 500’, is a good trek away but still gives the visitor on foot wonderful photo opportunities.

There were plenty of areas for individual and multiple-family RV and/or camping opportunities. While there is a small convenience store at the Hwy. 95-Hwy. 373 junction, there are limited facilities and services available. So plan accordingly for food and water and any other necessities for this great outdoor adventure.
