Between Grass & Sky at the Nevada Museum of Art

The Nevada Museum of Art is recognizing 25 years of Elko’s National Cowboy Poetry Gathering with an exhibit inspired by the event and the people in it.

Between Grass & Sky by Nik Hafermaas depicts imagery based on western life and themes that have emerged in ranching and cowboying. Hafermaas wanted to show how he saw the west and how he felt it was portrayed in other cultures. In doing so, he incorporated some of the artistry that comes from the ranching culture, such as saddlemaking.

I had a chance to see Nik Hafermaas speak several months ago, while he was introducing his work, and I highly recommend taking a look at this. Hearing what the exhibit is about might actually be a bit easier if you listen to Hafermaas himself. He did an interview with a local podcast a few months ago, and explains his inspiration quite well.

Between Grass & Sky runs until May 17.
