Heavenly fires up West Coast’s largest snowmaking system

Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe, partnering with Mother Nature, is taking advantage of cold nights and its high-performing snowmaking system to cover the slopes with more fresh snow in time for a planned opening Nov. 20. The south shore resort is making snow at the top of the Gondola and on the California Trail.

Under optimum conditions, Heavenly can cover 73 percent of its trails in machine-made snow, producing 3 ½ feet of snow over one acre in an hour, enough to blanket a football field with 8 ½ feet during an average three-hour game. The snowmaking process is viewable via Heavenly’s Web cams at www.skiheavenly.com.

“It’s comforting to know that when it’s cold, we have snow,” John Wagnon, Heavenly’s vice president of marketing and sales, said. “Our guests can be confident that come opening day, they’ll be skiing and riding on the best and most consistent snow surface at Lake Tahoe.”

The resort offers a $369 season pass. Its “Refer a Friend” program, open to all adult Heavenly Pass holders and Heavenly College Pass holders, offers $20 in “mountain money” redeemable at all on-mountain dining and retail establishments for each referred friend who purchases a Heavenly Pass, Heavenly College Pass or Epic Pass. www.skiheavenly.com/friend.
