There was a vibrant, lush wetlands parcel near Mesquite that was a vital part of the Virgin River ecosystem. This riparian ecosystem along the river was very green from thriving vegetation and served many purposes to the surrounding environment, including supplying food, cover, and water for a diversity of birds and other wildlife.
Volunteers clearing tamariskA flood in 2005 changed the flow of the Virgin River which severely affected this once thriving wetland area. When the flood waters receded, a 10-acre bowl that was isolated from the river was left. Invasive plants and weeds have begun to overtake this area and squeeze out the native plants and wildlife that are enjoyed by those recreating along the Virgin River. It is important to restore the wetlands and recreate the balance of nature along the river.
The Mesquite Area Chamber of Commerce-Leadership Mesquite program and Partners in Conservation have teamed together to facilitate a day-long restoration project for this wetlands area on Saturday, October 10. Time frame for the work will be 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All volunteers, from near or afar, are needed and welcome to help with this project.
The restoration project has an easy to moderate level of difficulty. The main tasks will be removing tamarisk and other invasive weeds, as well as removing trash. Materials needed include: gloves, garden tools and trash bags, sun screen, and WORK clothes (hats, long sleeve shirts and pants, and shoes). Other items that are recommended, as appropriate to each volunteer, are eye protection, dust masks, and insect repellant.
Check your calendar. Whether you live close by or are traveling and will be in Mesquite or the southern Nevada area, sign up and get involved in this very worthwhile project.
