Reno's beautiful bike path along the river

Take a few hours to ride a bike along the Truckee River

Photo by RenoTahoeBiking wasn’t a hobby that I thought that I would want to get into. I’ve been pretty active all my life, but biking? Sure, it’s great exercise and you can bond with people who share that same interest, but I still thought it wasn’t for me.

It wasn’t very long until I found myself and a friend at the Reno Bike Project buying me a mountain bike. It wasn’t a brand new bike, but the RBP took care of it, made sure it was working all right and sold it to me for what I thought was a fair price.

Before I get going, let me tell you that I had not ridden a bike since I was a kid. While I was testing out the bike, I was proud of myself for not falling over. But then there were also the shifting gears part. I decided to post-pone that learning experience. There was no way I was going to learn how to change gears that same day. Baby steps, people.

After buying the bike, a helmet and having my friend change the gears for me so I can ride it easier, we headed off to bike a trail that ran along the Truckee River, starting from downtown Reno, right across from the Sienna.

As a beginner rider, it scared the dickens out of me to bike downtown where cars drive right next to me and the fear of dying was constantly in my mind (an overreaction, I know.) So when my friend mentioned that he knew of a trail, I was happy.

The trail followed right next to the Truckee River. There was no vehicle traffic and it was an easy trail to bike or even walk (one of the fastest ways of figuring out how out of shape you are is to go for a bike ride.) It was a trail you could see yourself walking down, hand-in-hand with your sweetheart and enjoying the peacefulness of nature.

The trail was perfect.

The trail went for miles and also had a sign along the path telling you the distance to certain areas. We could have followed it all the way to Glendale Avenue but we decided to turn around a few miles into it, near the Grand Sierra Resort. Biking back was almost as easy as the way we came. There were not many people on the path and it was a wonderful first outing.

There was nothing better than to bike along the river, surrounded by trees and overall enjoying the beauty of nature that I wouldn’t have expected to find in the heart of Reno.
