Here’s a video we shot earlier this week at Boreal.
The sun is still shining but ski season has officially begun at Lake Tahoe. This is one of the best times to try out your new skis before the resorts get crowded and the weather turns stormy. Late autumn skiing rivals spring skiing with bright sunny skies, cold, crisp air and fresh snow packs.
Boreal opened its lifts this week with over a foot of fresh snow and discounted lift tickets to sweeten the deal. Boreal is on the northwest shore of Lake Tahoe and a 45 minute drive from Reno.
Mt. Rose – Ski Tahoe is expecting to open its lifts Nov. 13 while Heavenly Mountain Resort will follow Nov. 21. The whole Lake Tahoe region has received significant snowfall in the last several weeks and temperatures have stayed cold enough for snowmaking equipment to fire up and add to the snowpack. This is expected to be a long, stormy winter… perfect for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and anything else that requires a continually fresh blanket of soft Sierra snow.
With Boreal, Mt. Rose and Heavenly set for a long winter, now is the perfect time to plan your trip. Staying in Reno is a great option as both resorts, along with all of the Lake Tahoe region’s ski areas, are just a short drive. Many Reno hotels also offer shuttles to the resorts, making your stay as convenient as possible. So as you plan your trip, make sure to check out the deals we have for staying and skiing at one of the world’s top locations.
The only thing the snow isn’t good for is driving, so check the road conditions before driving to Tahoe by going to SkiTravelNevada.mobi on your mobile phone. The road conditions are automatically updated by the Nevada Department of Transportation, and while on the mobile site, you can search for hotel packages and ski resort information too. If you’re flying to Reno, you can take the South Tahoe Express shuttle to Lake Tahoe (www.southtahoeexpress.com) and not worry about driving at all.
