If you haven’t been to the Thunderbird Lodge, and you’ll be spending any time in the Lake Tahoe area, you must do this. In order to get the deal, you have to call 775-832-1606 and mention “Cool Deals.”
The Thunderbird Lodge, built by the eccentric George Whittell, is amazing. Originally just a couple of expansive rooms overlooking Lake Tahoe, the lodge became a retreat and eventual home of Whittell, who owned about 27 miles of shoreline on the eastern side of Lake Tahoe during the early-1900s. Whittell owned that much land simply because he didn’t want any neighbors.
At the lodge he built an underground tunnel system that he used to escape poker games he was losing in the poker room, a few hundred feet from the main lodge, and to house his pet lion. The lodge was constructed with just a main entertaining room and a bedroom. He didn’t add more bedrooms because he didn’t want any guests staying over.
Finally, Whittell had one of the finest yachts on Lake Tahoe, and it’s still available to see when visiting the property.
A deal of any sort is a great opportunity to check out the Thunderbird Lodge. Heck, you probably should even without the deal.
