June brings special exhibit of Carson Valley history

The Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park’s June events highlight Carson Valley people and history. The new “Carson Valley History: A Community of Cousins” exhibit June 11-13 and 19-20 is just in time for the annual Carson Valley Days celebration, which observes its centennial this year.

Recent donations to the park’s collection of thousands of Dangberg family artifacts came from Steve Achard, grandson of H.F. Dangberg Jr., the noted early 20th-century Nevada cattleman and rancher. As a youngster, Achard raised 4-H steers at the ranch. His “calf box,” a wooden box that he used to carry his grooming tools and calf medicines (above, with Mark Jensen), and photos of him with his steer greet visitors on the ranch house’s entrance porch.

Register Now for the 8th Annual Eagles and Agriculture Event

The annual gathering of eagles and celebration of agriculture is planned for February 19-21, 2010 in northern Nevada’s Carson Valley. There will be featured tours and workshops including an Owl Prowl Tour and Live Field Demonstration, Raptor Highway and Byway Tour, and Birds of Prey Lecture.

Historic park celebrates a century of holiday traditions in Minden.

Generations of Carson Valley’s prominent Dangberg family celebrated Christmas in the house. A modern artificial tree decorated mostly with vintage items sits in the same location where the Dangbergs placed their holiday trees. In the next room, a colored light wheel illuminates the aluminum tree family members received for free when they bought an RCA-Whirlpool color television in 1973.

Busted: Carson Valley Myths

Guy Rocha, former Nevada State Archivist and noted historian, will present “Carson Valley Myth-Busting” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 18. The public is invited to attend this free outdoor program, which begins at 11 a.m

Rocha will set the record straight about 19th and 20th century Carson Valley historical myths, separating fact from fiction. He will address the long-standing, but untrue, belief that Dr. Eliza Cook was Nevada’s first female physician, the conflicting claims on the inspiration for George Washington Gale Ferris’ invention of the Ferris Wheel and the half-truths that have become entrenched in the public mind regarding film actress Mary Pickford’s Nevada connections. He will explore these and other dubious claims related to local history and discuss how such untruths develop.
