City and serenity: the beauty of Reno-Tahoe

Last week I was reminded of a simple, reassuring truth of living in Reno-Tahoe—whether you like the hustle and bustle of city life, or the tranquility of the outdoors, both are easily accessible. On the same day, I attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new development in downtown Reno and participated in a full-moon hike led by the Tahoe Rim Trail Association. While the latter is more my style, it’s nice to know the City of Reno is continuing its renaissance mission, even in tough economic times.

Seven great hikes in the Lake Tahoe Basin

The Reno Gazette-Journal just published a brief rundown of some good hikes you can find around Lake Tahoe. Hiking in the Lake Tahoe Basin is a wonderful summertime activity. The temperatures are cool, the views are magnificent, and you might even run into some snow that remains from the winter storms.

The first one listed, Mt. Rose, sounds particularly intriguing:

Mount Rose. At 10,776 feet, Mount Rose is a must-do for any local hiker worth her boots. The summit offers views of the lake, the Truckee Meadows, Boca and Stampede reservoirs and the Martis Valley. On an exceptionally clear day, you may be able to glimpse Mount Lassen and even snowcapped Mount Shasta, which sits 186 miles to the northwest. Have some climbing energy left? Take the short scramble north to Mount Rose’s “other” peak, Church Peak, and leave a souvenir in the register container.

You know, the N that is painted on the side of the mountain that is behind the University of Nevada, Reno and overlooks Reno.

I have to admit that it was my idea. One of my friends had been up there before and told me that the view was amazing and I wanted to experience that for myself. So we planned out the day to do it and got prepared.
